Need For Speed Carbon review

Need For Speed Carbon has been labeled several times by the consumers as “the best one of the series”.

Unlike the games prior to Need For Speed Underground, Need For Speed Carbon has an actual storyline. It takes up where Most Wanted left off.

Your coming up to the finish line at a high speed, it’s obvious you’ll win…..when suddenly a few weird energy blasts come out of nowhere immobilizing all the other cars. As police cars come around the corner and start arresting everybody, you quickly grab your winnings and leave with all haste.

It cuts to you coming down a canyon road back to the city from which you ran from. A highly decorated tuner comes up from behind and rams you(it immediately starts the game here).

There are several types of races in Carbon, and they are all immensely fun. I have a list of them here.

  • Circuits: Do I have to explain this?
  • Sprints: A simple race from point A to point B.
  • Checkpoints: You race by yourself through a long course going through checkpoints before the time runs out.
  • Drifts: You’re racing through a twisty course using brakes to put your car into a “drift”. The longer your drift the more you get.
  • Canyon Drift: Same as normal drifts……except some of the barriers are wooden. You hit them, and they’ll smash. Go over the edge and the race is over.

Once you conquer enough races…that zone’s boss comes after you. He/she will challenge you to three races.

  • Boss Circuit: A simple circuit against the boss. If you win the circuit the rest will be settled in the canyons.
  • Canyon Boss Race Heat One: You will be going down the canyon with the boss in front of you. The closer you get to the boss the more points you get.
  • Canyon Boss Race Heat Two: The same as heat one..only the boss follows you. Try to outdistance them in order to win.

After you defeat the boss, the game will show you six cards. You get to two of them. Two of the cards have pictures on them; the others have question marks. One of the picture cards give you unique decals; the other one gives you better engines and such. The “mystery” cards have better rewards. One of the rewards is a “pink” slip. This card will give you the boss’s own car.

One of the most fun parts of NFS Carbon is “Free Drive”. Free drive allows you to cruise around town causing mayhem(doesn’t sound very fun does it?). Free drive gets much better. After causing problems and generally damaging private and public property, the police come after you.

Once the police start pursuit a meter will appear. One side says “busted” the other “evade”. If the busted meter fills up all the way, the screen will suddenly flash “Busted”, and you’re……well……busted. The police will impound your car. If you get arrested three times with a certain car, they’ll impound your car for good
