Could Windows Actually Go Subscription-Based?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Microsoft has for a long time liked the idea of Windows being subscription-based. What do I think? If they do, their little empire will collapse.

They’ve got to be kidding. Really, would you pay a yearly subscription…just for your computer to operate? You already pay $30-50 a year for your security suite, do you want to pay $100/year for your OS? If you stopped paying that fee, your computer would cease to function. Would you really agree to that? I wouldn’t.

.Mac GMail?

Monday, June 11th, 2007

An interesting rumor surfaced today. Could Apple and Google be planning something for Apple’s .Mac email service? There was a post on Engadget suggesting so.

There are several possibilities, supposing this rumor has any validity.

  • .Mac could end up being powered by GMail
  • Push GMail on the iPhone
  • GMail integration with the Mac OS
  • All of the above

There have been mysterious quotes from Steve Jobs as well. Is something being planned? Who knows.

Apple Plans an LED-lit MacBook Pro

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Apple, it seems, may be the first computer company to readily offer laptops with LED-backlit displays. While they haven’t confirmed it yet (do they ever confirm anything?), there is a good chance.

What’s so great about that? LEDs last a heck of a lot longer than the fluorescent bulbs currently behind the screens. If implemented right, they offer much better colors than conventional LCDs. Today’s LCD monitors tend to have washed out colors due to the backlight. LED-lit LCDs can put an end to that irritating problem.

There’s speculation that Apple will announce the updated laptops (if they are planning them…) when Mac OS X Leopard is released. Makes sense to me.
